Question: Dear Kryon: I live in Spain. I am sorry if I will ask you a question you might have already answered, but the translations of your books are very slow and I might not have gathered all information you have already given. I am quite concerned about abandoned animals. It seems that many people buy animals for their children and as soon as they grow, they set them out somewhere. Recently I had the occasion to see a small kitten in the middle of the street. I did not immediately react, since I could have stopped and taken it, without getting out of the car. So, I went on and at the first occasion I could turn, I went back to see if I could take the kitten, but it was to late, somebody had already killed it. This happened some month ago, but I still feel very sorry for that kitten. I just would like to know, what kind of entity are these animals and how does this fit in our world. Are these entities which choose this kind of life, like we do choose our kind of Human life? I see so many abandoned animals and every time I see one, my heart aches... I would like to know more about them.

Answer: Dear one, indeed the answer has been given, but let us give it again so you all understand. Animals are here on earth for three (3) reasons.

(1) The balance of biological life. . . the circle of energy that is needed for you to exist in what you call "nature."

(2) To be harvested. Yes, it's true. Many exist for your sustenance, and this is appropriate. It is a harmony between Human and animal, and always has. Remember the buffalo that willingly came into the indigenous tribes to be sacrificed when called? These are stories that you should examine again. The inappropriateness of today's culture is how these precious creatures are treated. Did you know that if there was an honoring ceremony at their death, they would nourish you better? Did you know that there is ceremony that could benefit all of humanity in this way. Perhaps it's time you saw it.

(3) To be loved and to love. For many cultures, animals serve as surrogate children, loved and taken care of. It gives Humans a chance to show compassion when they need it, and to have unconditional love when they need it. This is extremely important to many, and provides balance and centering for many.

Do animals know all this? At a basic level, they do. Not in the way you "know," but in a cellular awareness they understand that they are here in service to planet earth. If you honor them in all three instances, then balance will be the result. Your feelings about their treatment is important. Temper your reactions with the spiritual logic of their appropriateness and their service to humanity. Honor them in all three cases.

Dolphin cargo puts airline in hot water

CNN News, Priyanka Boghani, February 27th, 2012

Hong Kong (CNN) – A local airline has found itself in hot water with environmentalists over a recent cargo flight of dolphins.

According to the Chinese newspaper China Daily, the airline transported five dolphins from Japan to Vietnam on January 16. An internal memo to the airline staff was leaked boasting of the transaction’s success saying that it earned the company HK$850,000 (US $110,000) in cargo revenue. The memo also included a photograph of the dolphins lying in shallow, narrow containers with their fins protruding, inside the Boeing 733F cargo plane.

The controversy has sparking an online petition at change.org pressuring Hong Kong Airlines to stop carrying live dolphins as cargo. So far, 4000 people have signed.

“They spend at least seven hours in this cruel confinement. Dolphins are neither cargo, nor commerce, nor entertainment” read the petition which describes the plastic funnels used to ship the live dolphins as “flying coffins.”

China Daily, a state-run English newspaper, reported that the five dolphins are believed to be from the Japanese town of Taiji, the scene of an annual dolphin slaughter depicted in the Oscar award winning documentary “The Cove.”

Hong Kong Airlines said “no dolphins were injured during the shipment,”  that they adhere to government rules and International Air Transport Association regulations on live animal transportation and are committed to animal welfare protection. The airline also added in a statement that they were “totally unaware of the complexities” surrounding the “dark side of the dolphin story.”

The airline reportedly made a stopover in Hong Kong and a spokesperson for the Agriculture Fisheries and Conservation Department confirmed that they were aware of the dolphins in advance but did not carry out any inspection.

Amazon removes whale meat products from Japanese site

Public outcry forces online retailer to ditch products including whale bacon, whale jerky and canned whale meat

Environmental groups are claiming a major victory after the online retailer Amazon removed whale meat products from its site in Japan.

Amazon was accused of hypocrisy by the UK-based environmental investigation agency [EIA] after investigators found 147 whale products for sale on the site, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Seattle-based company.

The products contravened the firm's policy of refusing to advertise unlicensed or illegal wildlife products, including endangered species.

Some of the items came from whale species listed as endangered, according to Amazon.com's Unpalatable Profits, a report by the EIA and the Humane Society International.

Others were traced to Japan's annual "research" hunts in the Antarctic, during which it slaughters more than 900 minke whales and a small number of fin whales.

Links to the products, which included whale bacon, whale jerky and canned whale meat, were active on Tuesday night, but had been removed by the following day after the company's chief executive, Jeff Bezos, received tens of thousands of messages of protest via email, Twitter and other social media.

"We welcome Amazon's action to remove whale products from its Japanese website but urge Amazon to confirm it will enact a company-wide ban on the sale of all products derived from whales, dolphins or porpoises," said Clare Perry, a senior campaigner for the agency.

The EIA said its investigators bought the products late last year, adding that some contained excessive levels of mercury, while labels on up to a third of the items did not list the species.

Mark Jones, executive director of Humane Society International UK, said: "In just 24 hours, more than 35,000 supporters have appealed to Amazon for a total ban on the sale of whale, dolphin and porpoise products. The public wants these animals protected rather than killed and sold for profit."

The EIA report said: "The most popular product at the time of research was coastally caught Baird's beaked whale jerky, sold by Hakudai company. The second most popular item, also a Hakudai product, was Icelandic fin whale bacon."

The agency also released a 50-second video drawing attention to the sale of whale products widely available online.

Iranian oil tanker anchors off Indonesia in rare move

Reuters, by Francis Kan and Yaw Yan Chong, Singapore, Thu Feb 23, 2012

(Reuters) - An Iranian supertanker loaded with crude has made a rare journey to an anchorage point off the coast of an Indonesian island used for offshore sales and storage of oil.

The Delvar, part of the National Iranian Tanker Co.'s (NITC) fleet, arrived at Karimun Island in the Singapore Strait on Thursday, according to Reuters Freight Fundamentals Database. The vessel remains anchored with its draft indicating an almost full load, the data showed. A super tanker, or Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), can carry up to two million barrels of oil.

Tehran has been struggling to sell its crude in the face of tightening U.S. sanctions and an EU embargo that kicks in on July 1. Major Asian buyers are planning to cut back imports in order to win a waiver from U.S. sanctions, sapping a key revenue lifeline for Iran.

Karimun is a key offshore storage point near Asia's biggest oil trading hub Singapore and is often used for ship-to-ship transfers (STS), but NITC vessels have not been known to call there.

"It's very interesting. I've never seen NITC vessels coming to Karimun," said a Singapore-based shipbroker.

Karimun has been frequently used as a STS location for more than seven years, and some tankers, particularly VLCCs, have anchored there for stints of up to three months.

"If they have sold the oil, it's most likely to a refiner. Traders won't go near Iranian crude. They also could be storing it there," said a Singapore-based crude oil trader.

Western financial sanctions have crimped Iran's purchases of grain, cooking oil and tea. Tehran is turning to barter - offering gold bullion in overseas vaults or tankerloads of oil - as new financial sanctions have hurt its ability to import basic staples for its 74 million people.

Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said there was currently no agreement on barter trade with Iran.

"So far we haven't got any proposal on barter trade from the Iranian government," Wirjawan told Reuters on Thursday.

Separately, Indonesian state oil firm Pertamina said the Iranian tanker was not for them, according to the spokesman.

Refiners in the region who are known to buy Iranian crude include Malaysian state-owned Petronas and Royal Dutch Shell's 500,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Singapore, traders said.

Dolphins deserve same rights as humans, say scientists

BBC News, 21 February 2012

Recognising the rights of dolphins would end whaling and their captivity

Related Stories

Dolphins should be treated as non-human "persons", with their rights to life and liberty respected, scientists meeting in Canada have been told.

Experts in philosophy, conservation and animal behaviour want support for a Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans.

They believe dolphins and whales are sufficiently intelligent to justify the same ethical considerations as humans.

Recognising their rights would mean an end to whaling and their captivity, or their use in entertainment.

The move was made at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Vancouver, Canada, the world's biggest science conference.

It is based on years of research that has shown dolphins and whales have large, complex brains and a human-like level of self-awareness.

This has led the experts to conclude that although non-human, dolphins and whales are "people" in a philosophical sense, which has far-reaching implications.

'Self-aware'

Ethics expert Prof Tom White, from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, author of In Defence of Dolphins: The New Moral Frontier, said dolphins were "non-human persons".

"A person needs to be an individual. If individuals count, then the deliberate killing of individuals of this sort is ethically the equivalent of deliberately killing a human being.

Intelligent cetacean behaviour

  • A member of a group of orcas, or killer whales, in Patagonia had a damaged jaw and could not feed. The elderly whale was fed and kept alive by its companions.
  • Dolphins taking part in an experiment had to press one of two levers to distinguish between sounds, some of which were very similar. By pressing a third lever, they were able to tell the researchers they wanted to "pass" on a particular test because it was too hard. "When you place dolphins in a situation like that they respond in exactly the same way humans do," said Dr Lori Marino. "They are accessing their own minds and thinking their own thoughts."
  • A number of captive dolphins were rewarded with fish in return for tidying up their tank. One of them ripped up a large paper bag, hid away the pieces, and presented them one at a time to get multiple rewards.
  • In Iceland, killer whales and fishermen have been known to work together. The whales show the fishermen where to lay their nets, and in return are allowed to feed on part of the catch. Then they lead the fleet to the next fishing ground.
  • "We're saying the science has shown that individuality - consciousness, self-awareness - is no longer a unique human property. That poses all kinds of challenges."

The declaration, originally agreed in May 2010, contains the statements "every individual cetacean has the right to life", "no cetacean should be held in captivity or servitude, be subject to cruel treatment, or be removed from their natural environment", and "no cetacean is the property of any state, corporation, human group or individual".

It adds: "The rights, freedoms and norms set forth in this declaration should be protected under international and domestic law."

Psychologist Dr Lori Marino, from Emory University in Atlanta, told how scientific advances had changed the view of the cetacean brain.

She said: "We went from seeing the dolphin/whale brain as being a giant amorphous blob that doesn't carry a lot of intelligence and complexity to not only being an enormous brain but an enormous brain with an enormous amount of complexity, and a complexity that rivals our own."

Dolphins had a sense of self which could be tested by the way they recognise themselves in mirrors, she added.

"When you get up in the morning and look in the mirror and know that's you, you have a sense of 'you'," said Dr Marino.

"They have a similar sense. They can look in a mirror and say, 'Hey, that's me'."

Hydropower has big potential; many detractors

Deutsche Welle, 20 February 2012

Hydroelectric power is climate friendly, but it remains a disputed energy source. It's not always the case that renewable energy has a positive impact on the environment, as some major dam projects have proven.

Humans have used water-generated energy sources for over 2,000 years. Today, power produced from water accounts for 15 percent of worldwide electricity production - more than nuclear energy. Other renewable forms of energy, such as wind and solar, account for just 4 percent.

Water's potential, however, is far from exhausted, and it is an attractive alternative to energies that contribute to carbon dioxide levels.

Studies show that hydroelectric power could meet nearly all of the planet's energy needs. But that is not likely to happen.

"The cost-benefit ratio just does not work out," according to Andre Böhling of Greenpeace Germany. "Water as a renewable energy has to be considered in a differentiated way - on a case-by-case basis."

The varying outcomes of large-scale dam projects illustrate Böhling's point.

Old dam, new energy

Harvesting power from water
has a long tradition
One such project in Honduras called the Esperanza Hydroelectric Facility offers an example of how water can be used ideally and effectively. The facility draws on existing dam structures, occupies a minimal amount of space, and the positive effects of its constant energy production are apparent.

Canadian entrepreneur Ron Turner heads the project which has been nominated for the World Clean Energy Award. The facility is the first project in the world to sell its carbon offsets in accordance with the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.

But many big dam projects develop into ecological, economic and social disasters, becoming far too intrusive on nature and society.

The Indian Sardar Sarovar Dam and the Three Gorges Dam in China symbolize environmental destruction and disregard for human rights rather than environmental progress.

Dams that result in the flooding of forest areas are especially problematic. Over the course of years, the rotting plants they leave behind release large quantities of methane - a gas that has an even worse impact on the climate than carbon dioxide.

Despite their questionable record, large-scale dams continue to be built in India, China and South America.

Discussions at an end

Brazil's Itaipu Dam is the world's
 second-largest hydroelectric power
producer
In much of the West, such projects are no longer conceivable.

"The discussion about big new projects in Germany is over," said Harald Uphoff of Germany's National Association of Hydroelectric Plants.

The growth opportunities that remain will likely come by way of new methods and technology. Experts are currently testing special buoys that can be hung in rivers with little ecological impact.

Another priority is modernizing the often more than 50-year-old plants in order to generate more electricity, and the project in Honduras offered one example of how that can work.

Potential for Germany?

Accounting for 3.5 percent of Germany's electricity output, hydroelectric power is the country's second biggest form of renewable energy after wind. But the economic and ecological sense of creating more water power facilities is a divisive issue.

"In the long term, people should not expect significant increases in water power production," said Andre Böhling.
Others disagree, like Uphoff, who argues that "such attitudes lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy."

The Heimbach power plant in Germany
has generated electricity since 1904
Representatives from the hydroelectric power industry argue that water could provide at least a third more electricity in Germany. Their hopes lie largely with miniature plants - small, decentralized facilities with outputs up to five megawatts. They currently are responsible for 20 percent of Germany's hydropower.

"Such facilities are often enough to provide energy for small communities," Uphoff said.

15,000 unused sites

The federal government sponsored a 2008 study of German rivers and streams discovering 15,000 embankments and barrages not yet used for generating power. Industry representatives would like to see hydro facilities account for as much energy production as nuclear power plants, but environmental objections stand in their way.

German legislators passed a 2009 bill with incentives to produce electricity in environmentally-friendly ways. Those who equip their small-scale hydro facilities with ecologically-sound measures, like fish ladders, will receive more money for each watt they contribute to the power supply.

Japan releases Dutch Sea Shepherd activist

RWN, 17 February 2012

Sea Shepherd activist Erwin Vermeulen has been released from a Japanese prison.

(Photo: Sea Shepherd)
The Dutch environmentalist was arrested last December while he was respresenting Sea Shepherd as a ‘cove guardian’ in Taiji during the annual dolphin drives. Vermeulen was allegedly involved in a pushing incident while trying to photograph the dolphins.

The public prosecutor has appealed the court’s verdict, which freed Vermeulen and ordered him to pay a fine of some 1,000 euros. Pending the decision of an appeals court, the Dutchman is not allowed to leave Japan.

Sea Shepherd is considering launching proceedings against the Japanese state for holding Vermeulen for two months in a case which is minor enough to warrant a small fine – should that also be the outcome of the appeals court.

The bloodiness of the dolphin drives around the village of Taiji was first highlighted by Sea Shepherd in 2003. Since then, the organization has appointed ‘cove guardians’ to monitor the hunters’ activities.

US judge denies preliminary injunction to whalers

In a separate court case in the US on Thursday, a judge refused to restrain the US Sea Shepherd group from disrupting the activities of Japanese whalers, allegedly with violence.

Japanese whalers sought a court order preventing the Sea Shepherd and its founder Paul Watson "from engaging in physical attacks on plaintiffs' vessels in the Southern Ocean," referring to the ocean encircling Antarctica.

Last month Japan's Fisheries Agency said anti-whaling activists threw paint and foul smelling acid at a whaling ship in the Antarctic ocean in a fresh bid to halt the annual hunt, officials said.

Two boats belonging to Sea Shepherd approached the Japanese whaling vessel Yushin Maru No. 2 (YS2)  - which was seen leaving the Japanese port of Shimonoseki for the annual hunt - and launched 40 bottles containing paint and butyric acid, the agency said.

The fisheries agency’s mission is officially said to be for "scientific research," with the fleet aiming to catch around 900 minke and fin whales, according to a plan submitted by the government to the International Whaling Commission.

Stranded dolphins in Cape Cod baffle scientists

The worst spate of dolphin strandings in a decade will be brought to the attention of Congress

Scientists in Cape Cod are trying to determine what is causing dolphins to swim dangerously close to shore, with more than 100 becoming stranded in the last three weeks.

Members of Congress are due to be briefed on Friday about the strandings, the worst such event in more than a decade. Volunteers are maintaining coastal vigils and trying to get the animals back to sea.

"What is different about this particular event is that instead of having one discrete event, it is this string of ongoing strandings that started on 12 January and is just continuing," said Katie Moore, who manages marine mammal rescue operations for the International Fund for Animal Welfare. "It's day after day after day."

Moore is due to brief members of Congress on the strandings, which have been concentrated along a 25-mile stretch of coast that runs between the towns of Dennis and Wellfleet in Massachusetts.

It's not unheard of for dolphins to swim too close to shore, said Teri Rowles, who heads the marine mammals division of NOAA, the government agency that monitors oceans. "The Cape Cod area is a hot spot for mass strandings," she said.

But it's rare for such events to be confined to a single species – the common dolphin, in this case – and it was the worst such stranding since 1998.

Of the 111 that have come ashore, 81 were found dead, or died soon after they were stranded. Rescue workers, trundling along through the muck with specially adjusted stretchers, have eventually been able to return 30 surviving dolphins to the sea, Moore said.

But they remain baffled as to what caused the animals to swim so dangerously close to shore. Theories include the dolphins being lost, confused by changing tides or potentially diseased.

"In the ones we are finding alive, we are not seeing any consistent diseases or anything indicating a pattern as to why they might be stranding," said Moore. The dolphins were male and female, young and fullgrown. Most appeared healthy, although lab tests are still being processed.

There have been no severe winter storms: as in much of the north-east, the weather has been unusually warm for this time of year.

But Rowles suggested the animals could have become confused by changes in water temperature or tides that led them into Cape Cod Bay, or by the irregular features of the coastline.

There is also the possibility the dolphins could have been victims of their own natural sociability, simply following one another to their doom.

"These are very intelligent animals with very large brains, but there is something about the way they bond to one another," Moore said.

Those strong bonds serve the dolphins well in the wild. When they get into trouble, the dolphins stick together. But Moore added that social cohesion could sometimes be deadly. "That bond becomes a liability when they get into shallow water, and that may be why they mass strand."

The land didn't move; the magnetics did. Therefore, you might say their internal inherited migration map was flawed. The reason it's not happening now is because the calves, the generation beyond the one that beached themselves, figured it out and rewrote the maps. Nature [Gaia] does this. So the next generation didn't repeat it. Instead, it realigned itself to the migratory lay lines and now whales don't beach themselves nearly as often.

The magnetics of the planet continue to shift and the birds are unaware. Like the whales, many of the birds have migrated themselves right into a high place in the atmosphere, which pummeled them to death by freezing rain and hail. Then they fall from the sky. It's the weather cycle. Will they continue to do this? Some will, for awhile, and then they will figure it out and recalibrate. That's what nature does. ..)
