The Indonesian Navy has arrested 10 illegal Afghans who had tried to enter Bagan Siapi-Api waters off of Riau without having legal travel documents and passports, state news wire Antara reported.
Colonel Arief Sumarsono said on Thursday that the naval officers had caught the illegal entrants during its routine operation yesterday.
“The illegal immigrants were on a boat with 19 Indonesian residents who worked as migrant workers in Malaysia, where the Afghans used to work too,” he said.
He added that the Afghans were seeking political asylum following the war that had affected their homeland.
“We'll coordinate with Dumai Immigration Office about the fate of these illegal migrants and seek for the best solution,” he said, adding that all of them had undergone intensive questioning.(ewd)
