Jakarta. Three Indonesian nationals have been rescued but 32 are still missing after a South Korean fishing vessel sank off Russia’s far east coast on Monday.
The 1,753-ton
Oryong 501, operated by South Korea’s Sajo Industries, went down in the western
Bering Sea.
The trawler
was carrying 60 people, including one Russian inspector, 11 South Koreans, 35
Indonesians and 13 Philippine crew members.
Indonesia’s
Foreign Ministry said that as of Monday evening eight crew members had been
rescued, including three Indonesians. The condition of the three, however, is
still unknown.
One South
Korean sailor has been confirmed dead, Agence France-Presse reported.
The
36-year-old trawler was fishing for pollack when it sank in stormy weather.
Foreign
Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi has been in contact with her South Korean
counterpart, Yun Byung-Se, the ministry said.
A Russian
search and rescue team and the US Coast Guard are searching the accident
location. A South Korean Rapid Response team has also been deployed to Russia.
