Question: Dear Kryon: I live in Spain. I am sorry if I will ask you a question you might have already answered, but the translations of your books are very slow and I might not have gathered all information you have already given. I am quite concerned about abandoned animals. It seems that many people buy animals for their children and as soon as they grow, they set them out somewhere. Recently I had the occasion to see a small kitten in the middle of the street. I did not immediately react, since I could have stopped and taken it, without getting out of the car. So, I went on and at the first occasion I could turn, I went back to see if I could take the kitten, but it was to late, somebody had already killed it. This happened some month ago, but I still feel very sorry for that kitten. I just would like to know, what kind of entity are these animals and how does this fit in our world. Are these entities which choose this kind of life, like we do choose our kind of Human life? I see so many abandoned animals and every time I see one, my heart aches... I would like to know more about them.

Answer: Dear one, indeed the answer has been given, but let us give it again so you all understand. Animals are here on earth for three (3) reasons.

(1) The balance of biological life. . . the circle of energy that is needed for you to exist in what you call "nature."

(2) To be harvested. Yes, it's true. Many exist for your sustenance, and this is appropriate. It is a harmony between Human and animal, and always has. Remember the buffalo that willingly came into the indigenous tribes to be sacrificed when called? These are stories that you should examine again. The inappropriateness of today's culture is how these precious creatures are treated. Did you know that if there was an honoring ceremony at their death, they would nourish you better? Did you know that there is ceremony that could benefit all of humanity in this way. Perhaps it's time you saw it.

(3) To be loved and to love. For many cultures, animals serve as surrogate children, loved and taken care of. It gives Humans a chance to show compassion when they need it, and to have unconditional love when they need it. This is extremely important to many, and provides balance and centering for many.

Do animals know all this? At a basic level, they do. Not in the way you "know," but in a cellular awareness they understand that they are here in service to planet earth. If you honor them in all three instances, then balance will be the result. Your feelings about their treatment is important. Temper your reactions with the spiritual logic of their appropriateness and their service to humanity. Honor them in all three cases.

'Ice vault' idea to keep climate's time capsule intact

Imagine you are Sherlock Holmes bent on solving a mystery but the evidence is starting to crumble and eventually you will be left with worthless dust.

This is the worry which haunts ice scientists delving into Earth's threatened glaciers.

Deep inside them, the slumbering ice slabs hold information about Earth's climate past, and pointers for the future.

The frozen archive is formed from compacted layers snow which fell hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Learning more about the past through examining the glaciers could help us predict how our planet will respond when global warming kicks into higher gear -- just decades from now, if predictions are right.

Only a tiny amount of this glacial material has ever been extracted and examined.

And as temperatures rise, the fringes of many glaciers are softening to mush, threatening the survival of this precious testament.

"We are the only scientific community working on climate history whose research material is disappearing," lamented Jerome Chappellaz at the Laboratory for Glaciology and the Geophysics of the Environment in Grenoble, southeastern France.

"It is time to do something -- we have to act now, while the glaciers are still a useable source."

That "something" is a new scheme to build a vault for ice cores extracted by scientists from the deep chill of Antarctica.

About 50-130 millimetres (two to five inches) wide, in sections between one to six metres (a yard to 20 feet) long, ice cores are glaciology's mainstay.

Within them are telltale bubbles of gas, notably the greenhouse-gas carbon dioxide (CO2).

By studying them, "past eras can be reconstructed, showing how and why climate changed, and how it might change in the future," says the US National Snow and Ice Data Center.

The deepest-ever core, drilled in Antarctica, is 3,270 metres long, and revealed the world has gone through eight ice ages over about 800,000 years.

These cycles, which profoundly affect life on our planet, generally move in lockstep with greenhouse gases.

Until the start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th century, these heat-trapping gases had natural causes.

Today, the relentless burning of coal, gas and oil has taken carbon out of the ground and placed it in the atmosphere -- concentrations are now higher than at any time in the ice-core record.

'World's best refrigerator'

On present trends, Earth could face average warming of up to 4.8 degrees Celsius (8.6 degrees Fahrenheit) or more this century, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned.

But in some "hotspots," warming is happening faster than the global average, and for glaciers at lower altitudes and latitudes, time is running out.

"Antarctica is the best refrigerator in the world," Chappellaz told AFP.

In the envisioned vault, "the cores will be safe, even if a world war breaks out. There's no need for electricity. It will always be extremely cold. Even if there is 10 degrees (Celsius, 18 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming on the Antarctic plateaux, it will still be minus 43 C there, and the cores will be OK."

The vault would be at the French-Italian research base of Concordia, according to the scheme, which has the support of four other French institutes.

They are casting around for funding and sponsorships.

The UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) is considering joining the initiative.

"We support the idea although at this stage, we haven't really figured out how we can provide it," said Anil Mishra of Unesco's International Hydrological Programme.

Mountain glacier cores, as opposed to ice sheet cores, are generally 100 to 150 metres deep.

They provide more recent snapshots of climate but invaluable local insights.

They can shed light on how different mountain regions respond to sharp swings in temperature, weather patterns and atmospheric pollutants such as soot -- a useful tip in tackling flood risk and securing water supplies.

The first contributions to the vault will come next year, from the Col du Dome, a site 4,300 metres high on Mont-Blanc, Europe's highest peak, and more will come in 2017 from the Illimani glacier, 6,300 metres above the Bolivian capital of La Paz.

The scheme's organisers are hoping that American, Chinese, Italian, Swiss and South American researchers will also contribute cores.

Future generations may learn even more from the capsules than current science allows, said Chappellaz.

"A few centuries from now, who knows what kind of technology may be available for analysing the cores?" he asked.

New Mini Ice Age

"The weather you have today, and all the alarming attributes of it, is a scenario of what was scheduled to happen on Earth anyway. I review again that the weather changes you are seeing prophesied by myself, 21 years ago, are not a surprise. The changes are not caused by the pollutants you put in the air. You call it global warming and that's a nice phrase, and perhaps that will get you to put less pollutants in the air – a very good thing. But what you are seeing in the weather shift today was not caused by Humans putting things into the air. It would have happened anyway in about 300 years."

"We've called this process the water cycle, since it's all about water, not about air. The water is the predominant attribute of Gaia and of the weather cycle you're seeing. More predominant is the temperature of it. The cycle is ice to water and water to ice, and has been repeated on this planet over and over and over. It is not new. It is not exceptional. It is not frightening. But it's a cycle that modern humanity has not seen before, and it's a long cycle that is beyond the life span of a Human Being. Therefore, it tends to be overlooked or not seen at all !"

"In the days of the Lemurians, the water level of the Pacific Ocean was almost 400 feet lower, and that's only 50,000 years ago. [Kryon invites science to check this out – the water level at that time.] That was a water cycle working, and the reason it was lower was due to so much of the water being stored as ice. Today you're going through another water cycle that will eventually lead to cooling. The last one was in the 1400s."

"Science sees that at about 1650. As mentioned, they are so slow there is no remembrance that a Human has of them except in past writings and in the rings of the trees. The time span of the changes is so great that environmental record keeping does not exist in the form that it does today. But you can still look at the rings of the trees and at the striations of the rocks and can generally figure out that a few hundred years ago, you had a mini-ice age. Now you're going to have another one."

World's leading zoo association overlooked horrific cruelty to animals

Zoos belonging to World Association of Zoos and Aquariums filmed allowing shocking mistreatment of elephants, dolphins, lions, bears, penguins and whales

Dozens of examples of harrowing cruelty towards animals in zoos have been overlooked by the world’s top zoo organisation, animal welfare groups have alleged.

Zoos belonging to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Waza) have been filmed over the past five years making animals perform dangerous tricks, confining them to inadequate premises and beating them, contrary to Waza’s code of ethics, which demands the “highest standard of animal welfare”.

In November, an animal keeper at Mysore zoo in India was filmed beating an elephant, and Taman Safari in Indonesia runs a travelling dolphin circus in which dolphins are forced to jump through flaming hoops. Tourists are also able to pose with tigers for photos.

Zoo Negara in Malaysia has been condemned by a local MP for the terrible condition of its animals, and Dehiwala Zoo in Sri Lanka has come under fire after the deaths of a hippo, a lion and all the zoo’s penguins. The zoo has also been criticised for an elephant show in which handlers threaten the animals with sticks to make them do tricks.

A manacled performing elephant has been filmed at Dusit Zoo in Bangkok, and Almaty zoo in Kazakhstan and the National Taiwan Aquarium have been accused of housing bears and beluga whales, respectively, in sub-standard enclosures.

In 2009, a South Korean TV show filmed a small, terrified bear being placed inside a tiger enclosure at Everland Park.

All these zoos are members of Waza, a Switzerland-based organisation that acts as the peak member body for the world’s zoos. As revealed by the Guardian, Waza is being taken to court by an Australian conservation group over its alleged complicity in the infamous dolphin hunts in Taiji, Japan.

Waza’s code of ethics states that where animals are used in performances by zoos, they must “focus on natural behaviour” and “not demean of trivialise the animal in any way”.

It states: “Waza and its members should make all efforts in their power to encourage substandard zoos and aquariums to improve and reach appropriate standards. If it is clear that the funding or the will to improve is not there, Waza would support the closure of such zoos and aquariums.”

Despite these stipulations, Waza has confirmed that no zoo featured in the videos of alleged cruelty has been expelled, or publicly or privately condemned.

Waza has more than 300 individual zoo members, including London Zoo, the Zoological Society of San Diego, Toronto Zoo, Bronx Zoo and Melbourne Zoo.

Sarah Lucas, head of Australia for Dolphins, which is leading the court action against Waza, said the organisation was too closely wedded to the interests of its members.

“It’s very easy to find abuses in these zoos – elephants being beaten or bears being kept in tiny, grimy cages – but Waza doesn’t call out its members on any of these abuses,” she said.

“It’s easy to form the view that Waza is an organisation that protects its members’ interests above that of the animals.

“Many of the zoos and aquariums do take the code of ethics seriously, but there’s clearly a significant number that don’t and Waza itself doesn’t take it seriously. They need to enforce it, to take action. They’ve either got to do their job or stop pretending to be a policeman for zoos and aquariums.”

Lucas said Waza’s dual role as a voice for zoos and a conservation organisation was “inherently conflicted”.

Waza has previously expelled zoos for breaches of conduct, such as Johannesburg Zoo for the illegal importation of animals last year.

A spokeswoman for Waza said it took “reputable and reasonable complaints” very seriously. She said there had been no complaints over any of the examples of abuse highlighted by the Guardian, but that the man filmed beating an elephant at Mysore zoo had been fired.

The claims have raised concerns among Waza members, with one, Kolmarden Zoo in Sweden, weighing up whether to quit the organisation.

The director of the zoo, Mats Höggren, said he could not be part of the same organisation as the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which takes dolphins from the Taiji hunt.

“We can’t be even indirectly associated, that’s not possible,” he said. “We feel horrible about what’s happening over there and we need to put pressure on Waza to do something.

“We will wait a little longer but there needs to be something constructive or we will terminate our membership, for sure.”

Höggren sits on the executive committee of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, and said it would also discuss Waza membership.

Sir Richard Branson has added his voice to the condemnation of Waza’s link to the dolphin hunts.

“I was shocked to learn that the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which is meant to protect animals, has members that are heavily involved in the horrific capture of dolphins in Japan,” the Virgin founder said in a statement.

“I join with Australia for Dolphins in calling on Waza to end its support for these organisations, and to end its toleration of taking animals from the wild using traumatic methods. Waza is the world’s peak captivity body and it should take a strong stance – no dolphins or whales should be captured from the sea ever again.”

World's top zoo organisation accused of links to Taiji dolphin slaughter in Japan

Conservationists take World Association of Zoos and Aquariums to court for allegedly sanctioning a deal with fishermen in which dolphins were selected for capture

The world’s leading zoo organisation has been accused of being complicit in the infamous dolphin hunts in Taiji, Japan, by helping secure captured dolphins for one of its members, despite publicly condemning the practice.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Waza) is being taken to a Swiss court by conservationists who accuse it of misleading conduct over its stance on the Taiji dolphin hunts, which gained global attention through the documentary TheCove.

Waza is accused of sanctioning a private deal involving the fishermen who herd and slaughter the dolphins and the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Jaza), which is an associate Waza member.

Waza’s code of ethics labels the dolphin hunts “inherently cruel”, but it allegedly agreed a “dolphin management protocol” with Jaza in 2009 that involved a “gentler” method of herding small numbers of dolphins towards shore where they would be captured for aquariums.

At a meeting in August Waza suggested a two-year moratorium on dolphin drive hunts, but this was rejected by Jaza, Waza said. Instead, Jaza proposed – and Waza allegedly agreed – that during September no dolphins would be killed, but Jaza would get first pick of those that were rounded up, in large numbers if necessary.

After that, three other organisations – Dolphin Resort, Dolphin Base and the Taiji Town Development Public Corporation – could purchase excess animals, with the rest released. Conservationists claim conditions at these aquariums, including the 37 Jaza member aquariums that take dolphins from Taiji, are terrible.

Waza has previously said the dolphin hunts were part of a Japanese cultural tradition stretching back “centuries”, but wildlife campaigners insist records in Taiji show that the first large-scale hunts started in 1969 and have been primarily driven by the desire to capture animals for exhibit, rather than for meat.

The capture of dolphins is said to have doubled in the past 10 years. A fully trained dolphin on public display can be worth more than $100,000, compared with as little as $100 if butchered for meat. Anti-hunt campaigners say the market for captured dolphins in China is growing rapidly.

Over the past five years, observers say, more than 5,000 dolphins have been killed at Taiji, with a further 750 captured for aquariums. Since the August 2014 agreement, 751 dolphins have been killed, with 41 bottlenose dolphins captured.

The herding and slaughter of dolphins, highlighted by The Cove, has provoked outrage among animal welfare groups and some governments. In August, Caroline Kennedy, the US ambassador to Japan, caused a minor diplomatic rumpus when she tweeted that she was “deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing”.

During the hunts, dolphins are forced into shallow coves by boats, with fishermen banging metal pipes in the water. They are then slaughtered with knives or hoisted out of the water for capture, with buyers from aquariums picking their favoured animals to perform various tricks for audiences.

Marine scientists maintain the capture process imposes huge physiological stress upon dolphins and increases their chances of dying once they are in captivity – hence the need to constantly replenish stocks from the wild.

“I’ve observed the hunts and seen dolphins being hit by propellers, hit by boats, flung onto the rocks, they are horrific,” said Sarah Lucas, the head of Australians for Dolphins, the conservation group that has filed court action against Waza.

Lucas said the legal action, filed with the Geneva civil court, aimed to force Waza to enforce its code of ethics, or to expel Jaza.

“For Waza to present itself as an animal welfare and conservation organisation and on the other hand support a member involved in one of the cruellest practices in the world, to the extent of helping them get preferential purchasing positions, is deceptive and harmful to the efforts to put the hunts to an end,” Lucas said.

“Most zoos and aquariums around the world have no idea how Waza conducts itself behind closed doors. They will be very surprised to learn this.”

Waza has more than 20 associate members, including Jaza and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, as well as 300 individual zoo members, including London Zoo, the Zoological Society of San Diego, Toronto Zoo, Bronx Zoo and Melbourne Zoo.

Courtney Vail, the programs and campaigns manager at US-based Whale and Dolphin Conservation, said Waza’s actions were “beyond comprehension”.

“They seek to separate killing from acquisition, which is irrational as the methods utilised in driving and herding are the same,” she said. “Waza’s approach is not only encouraging additional hunts, it’s actually endorsing this method as a legitimate way to capture dolphins. Waza is complicit in this.”

A Japanese NGO, the Elsa Nature Conservancy, said Jaza had confirmed to it that Waza had agreed at the August meeting to the priority purchasing agreement. It said Waza also agreed that large pods, rather than the supposedly more humane smaller groups, of dolphins could be rounded up for Jaza to purchase.

The chairman of Jaza, Kazutoshi Arai, confirmed to the Guardian that Jaza had the first pick of bottlenose dolphins during September.

“We select the dolphins and the rest are released, but only during September,” he said. He acknowledged that during that month there were no limits on the size of the pods that fishermen could drive into the bay.

Arai insisted Waza did not explicitly voice an opinion on the new arrangements, or on giving Jaza and the Taiji organisations priority on procuring animals.

“Using separate drive hunts only for dolphins that will be bought by Jaza members is better, as long as everything is done to safeguard the animals’ welfare,” he said. “In this way we have responded to Waza’s requests to change the way we do things.

“The killing of dolphins in Japan is approved by the government, so that’s not Waza’s concern. Waza’s business is live capture. The two [killing and live capture] were mixed up before and that caused problems for zoos and aquariums.

“But if we separate live capture it’s much less of a problem.”

Waza officials reportedly told Jaza in October it still had not gone far enough in devising a humane way of procuring live dolphins.

In February, Jaza submitted a fresh report on its new method of live capture that is being discussed by Waza officials. Arai said Jaza had also asked Taiji fishermen not to separate bottlenose dolphin mothers from their calves.

The executive director of Waza, Gerard Dick, said the organisation had tried to influence Jaza to phase out drive hunts.

“Waza is not in any way or form participating in the drive hunts,” he said.

“We were informed by Jaza that there is a change of catching practices planned, implying that in the month of September only bottlenose dolphins shall be taken alive by Japanese aquariums,” he said. “No lethal takes would occur during this month.

“Waza has continuously tried to influence Jaza in order to eventually phase out the acquisition of dolphins by Japanese aquariums. Waza suggested a proposal to establish a two-year moratorium but this was unfortunately not acceptable.”

Dozen whales die after Australia stranding

Twelve whales died on Monday after stranding themselves against a rocky breakwater on Australia's west coast, with experts working hard to save another four.

The pod of long-finned pilot whales got into trouble in Bunbury harbour, 175 kilometres (110 miles) south of Perth, Western Australia's Department of Parks and Wildlife said.

The department's nature conservation leader Kim Williams said 12 whales had died, and six had been herded out to sea by small boats.

"This afternoon's efforts have focussed on the rescue of four remaining whales that were stranded in the shallows, and they were pulled out to sea using a sling and boats," he said in a statement.

"Unfortunately one of these whales has re-stranded and is being taken out to deeper water again, while the other three are not swimming strongly and there is a chance they will also re-strand."

Williams said it was hoped that the released whales would join another pod of 15 long-finned pilot whales which has been swimming in the area all day.

Whale beachings are relatively common in Australia, but scientists do not know why they happen.

In 2009 a group of long-finned pilot whales, which can grow up to 6.5 metres (21 feet) in length, stranded themselves in Hamelin Bay, south of Bunbury, with efforts to save most of them failing.

Question: Dear Kryon: I was wondering about the way I feel about whales and dolphins. I've had a feeling that I have to go to them sometime, but I don't know how or what I'm to do when I get there. Please help.

Question: Dear Kryon: I'm a Turkish/Islam woman of 57. I live in Ankara and work for the European Commission's project in Turkey. I've read almost all of the Kryon books twice, and I'm planning to read them once more. My question is about the whales. Why do they commit mass suicide? What is the reason for this very sad event? Is it a kind of protest against Human Beings?

Answer: Dear ones, we've channelled many times about the whales of this planet. In review, they're the living portions of an actual grid-system! They contain the "history of Earth" within their beings, and they're sacred for that reason. They coordinate and cooperate with the crystalline grid of your planet, which is currently being rewritten (see Kryon channelling on the Website: "What's Next?" December 8, 2002). Doesn't it strike you odd that these mammals are the only ones protected against hunting by more than 90 percent of the countries of Earth... even the places without oceans? Do you think that this is an accident or a coincidence? No. It's cellular information for all humanity to protect the whales and keep them safe. Dolphins are their cousins and support group, and they play a role in the whales' development. This is why you're so attracted to them.

Whales do not commit mass suicide. They have no consciousness to allow for this, and it has never happened. Instead, you see whales often beaching themselves and then being saved by Humans, only to re-beach themselves and die. This takes place mostly on the coastlines of your continents, and often on those areas of topography that "stick out," such as a peninsula or isthmus. Your Cape Cod is a good example in America, and is also a place where this has recently happened (up to 47 whales on a beach).

The reason is that whales, dolphins, amphibians, birds, and even insects all navigate to their breeding ground or migration areas each year via the magnetic grid of the planet! Each group follows the ley lines of magnetic influence, almost as if they had a built-in compass. In fact, they actually do!

The magnetic grid of this planet has changed so much, so quickly, as we told you it would in 1989, that there hasn't been time for the pods of whales to adjust with time to these changes. Instead, many simply follow the old magnetic lines of migration, only to find themselves on a beach instead of the open ocean, as the old magnetic direction used to take them. They're confused, and they simply line up and try again, just as they have for years. These things are temporary, and as tragic as you might see them, it's all part of "pruning" the system, and the calves will go around in the future, establishing new instinctive information for the new whales regarding the grid changes. This information has even now been validated this year (2003) by your scientists.

EU seeks to deter Mediterranean refugees

The number of asylum applicants to European nations rose by 44 percent last year, with the total reaching 626,000, according to EU statistics. Meanwhile, the EU is planning to intercept refugees in the Mediterranean.

Deutsche Welle, 22 March 2015

According to the European Union's statistics agency, Eurostat, 191,000 more people applied for asylum in European countries in 2014 than the previous year, with the number of Syrian asylum applicants rising to 122,800 from 50,000 in 2013.

It also said that many of these applicants sought asylum in Germany, with 32 percent of the total number, followed by Sweden with 13 percent, then Italy and France with 10 percent, and Hungary with 7 percent.

"It should be noted that these five member states registered different trends last year," Eurostat added.

Italy has been most concerned with scores of migrants coming to its borders by boats across the Mediterranean, mainly from Libya.

EU sea mission braces for migrants

With summer around the corner, a record number of refugees are expected to arrive in Europe by sea, especially traveling from Libya to Italy. The EU's largest border mission, Triton, conducted exercises off the eastern coast of Sicily earlier this week to repel the wave of refugees coming towards Europe.

Meanwhile, Egypt and Tunisia have offered help to the EU in trapping refugees on the Mediterranean Sea. According to Der Spiegel magazine, the two countries have struck an agreement with Germany and other major EU countries in this regard.

"Third countries can intervene more quickly and effectively due to their geographical proximity" to rescue refugees and prevent humanitarian tragedies, the magazine quoted a source as saying.

According to the reports, the Egyptian and Tunisian naval forces would bring migrants to "their own ports" on the North African coast instead of sending them back to their home countries.

Greens MEP Ska Keller told Der Spiegel that the EU states did not want to accept their responsibility in the refugee crisis, and that Egypt and Tunisia were not safe for the refugees.

A number of human rights organizations, including the United Nations, have criticized the EU countries for not taking in enough refugees.

'Tide of the century' swells around French landmark

Crowds of people have gathered at France's Mont Saint-Michel to see an unusually high spring tide caused by the current sun-moon configuration. Other locations will experience a similar phenomenon.

Deutsche Welle, 21 March 2015

The sun and the moon joined forces on Saturday morning to produce a remarkable natural spectacle at the Mont Saint-Michel abbey in northern France, with a tidal surge of around 14 meters (46 feet) that cut the rocky island off from the mainland.

Thousands gathered to see the tide, which reached a first high point during the night and is to reoccur on Saturday evening. The island will be lit by spotlights for the occasion.

The Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM), situated in Brest, said the expected tidal coefficient - an indicator of the difference in height between consecutive high and low tides - is 119, the highest-ever reported level. The coefficient ranges between 20 and 120.

Britanny's St. Malo will also see
exceptional tides
Mont Saint-Michel already has some of the strongest tides in the world, but the current positions of the sun and moon relative to the earth are producing an effect that is seen about once every 18 years or so - giving the lie to the media billing as "tide of the century."

The "supertide" phenomenon will also be seen at other places around the world, with the Bay of Fundy on the Atlantic coast of Canada expected to experience a surge of up to 16 meters. The Bristol Channel in western England is likely to see a more than 14-meter difference between low and high tide levels.

The tidal phenomenon is linked to Friday's solar eclipse and to the current "supermoon," which occurs when the moon comes closer to the earth than normal.

US lawyer argues chimps are people too

Vancouver (AFP) - Attorney Steven Wise is on a crusade to prove that, as a matter of law, chimps are people too.

For that matter, so are dolphins, elephants, gorillas and orcas.

Wise made his argument at the TED Conference that wrapped up in Vancouver, Canada on Friday.

"I had to invent the field of animal juris prudence," Wise told AFP at TED.

"Coming here is implicit affirmation that people are interested in what we have to say."

Wise argued that apes, chimps, elephants and orcas are as entitled to the rights of "persons" under law as are people or corporations.

Legal systems around the world have granted rights of personhood to holy scripts, mosques, companies, and even a river.

"Personhood is not a biological concept, it is a public policy concept," Wise said.

"The legal system decides it; human being is not synonymous with person."

He has devoted decades to the cause, which is now making its way through courts in the US state of New York.

Seeing animals as slaves

Wise, president of the Nonhuman Rights Project, is hoping a legal tactic successful in getting a slave legally transformed from property to person in a historic case in Britain will do the same for chimpanzees and other animals.

He will use the writ of habeas corpus, in which judges order prisoners or detainees brought before the court. Such writs, by definition, assign rights of personhood to those targeted.

Members of the project found chimpanzees in abysmal conditions in several parts of the state of New York, then filed for writs of habeas corpus in respective courts to get the animals moved to a refuge.

Reactions from judges have been mixed, with even sympathetic members of the bench averse to breaching the legal wall separating people from animals, according to Wise.

"Even in America, no judge wants to be the first to make this leap of faith," the animal rights champion said.

Wise, author of "Rattling the Cage" and other works defending animal rights, has been waging this legal battle since the early 1980s.

"They truly are slaves," Wise said of chimps, bonobos and other animals proven to have feelings, memories, language, foresight and other traits considered human.

"I realized there was no one looking out for their interests and they were just being exploited."

He recalled being met with hostility and ridicule early in the battle. Rival lawyers would bark when he walked into courtrooms.

After decades of laying groundwork and gathering allies, Wise and his team filed an opening salvo of lawsuits in New York about two years ago.

"We are going state by state, animal by animal and we are going to lose a lot before we start to win," he said.

"I expect to win, and not all that far into the future."

Tide of history

Victory would come in the form of a non-human animal being legally recognized as a person for some purpose, no matter how limited.

"Once that wall is pierced, judges will realize that they have to make more nuanced, rational decisions," Wise said of establishing that some animals have a right to be treated better than mere property.

Wise is working with lawyers in Europe, Argentina and other parts of the world.

"I think there is a tide of history and judges need to swim with it and not against it," Wise said.

"Orcas, apes, chimps and elephants should at least have the right to bodily liberty. I am not talking the entire animal kingdom, but lines have to be drawn."

The Nonhuman Rights Project is looking to hit US courts with its next case, on behalf of circus elephants, late this year.

"I think it may change the way people view entities that aren't human," Wise said of his quest.

"They may not have the knee-jerk reaction that we can exploit them."
